Well, I had a completely different post in mind for today but after seeing some good news for a change I decided to pass it along.
Confirming what I have posted about apparent sales in the tabletop market in general and the word out of GenCon last year the numbers are out and rather staggering.
First:

This should come as no surprise, but this should:
Video games sales down, hobby games up in 2011
"In a move that may reflect the shifting United States economy, video games sales plummeted 38% and hobby games sales are up 25%."

So, I feel pretty good that what appeared to be happening last year was sustainable, that Pathfinder continues to grow (and they deserve it - watch the videos at YouTube from GenCon for what else to expect this year from Paizo-that Bestiary Box is MINE) and for all the naysayers who say we are just a tiny speck of gaming goo and that everyone quit table top to play video games I get to proudly stand and say:
STFU

Great news!
ReplyDeleteYes, good news for a change.
ReplyDeleteI knew things seemed to be going fairly well after reading the reactions at GenCon last year.
It wasn't like everyone was jumping around and acting like it was the second coming but all the vendors/publishers/etc seemed to be in good spirits and talking about sales being up.
Tabletop roleplaying - all the fun, no subscription fee required.*
ReplyDelete* Offer does not apply to 4e D&D.
I think we are seeing a repeat of why RPGs blew up in the late '70s /early '80s - economy.
ReplyDeleteEven with the increased prices for about the cost of two video games you can buy a Pathfinder corebook and Bestiary and play as much as you want. There is tons of stuff online unlike when we wrote most of our own and it just makes sense. Hang out, beer, pizza and play (fill in the blank).
And the whole 'you gotta be online to play' video game thing is what killed it for me this current generation.
